On September the 23rd, 1948, a record crowd of over 30,000 people packed in and around Rushcutters Bay Stadium, to hear the debate between the anti communist priest Dr Paddy Ryan and well known communist Edgar Ross of the Communist Party’s Central Committee.

This booklet from 1945 contains a warning from the ACP about the workings of reactionary trade union groups directed by the Catholic Church. They sought to prevent the Communists from leading militant defence of workers’ interests, to shore up the position of employers and to impose conservative social values. This anti-worker force continues to plague the labour movement.

The Bolshevik revolution rose victorious, but not without enemies. The imperialist forces still remained and the USSR was facing the constant threat from the American, British, French imperialists. Then in 1933, an event that would change time occured, Fascism rose in Germany.

Complimented by a foreword by Rupert Lockwood, this pamphlet is aimed at dispelling the rumours of the violence of communists being propagated by the anticommunist propaganda of the time.

Forces continued to attack our union movement and P.J. Ryan, continued the crusade against communism and the ACP, writing a pamphlet attacking the then Gen Sec L.L. Sharkey. His response was accurate and swift as usual with a thorough analysis and rebuttal.
